Will the advent of new US administration recast Pak-US ties?

Barack Obama, who stands for bringing about a change not only within America, but also all across the world, on completion of his brief ten days in office gives the impression that he means business. The appointments of special envoys Mitchell for Middle East and Holbrooke for Pakistan and Afghanistan and declaring his reliance more on diplomacy rather than brute use of force have aroused hopes and aspirations among the people globally and especially, in the Muslim world. This is all the more significant that he chose giving his first interview as US President to an Arab newspaper telling the Muslim world that Americans are not your enemy, he pledged helping resolve the core issues of Palestine and Kashmir conflicts, which has been the bane for world peace, as it kept breeding acrimony, hatred, militancy, extremism and terrorism that haunting the world since 9/11. Obama seems to have his finger right on the nerves of the world public opinion, when he offered Iran a handshake, if it unclenched its fists.
In this backdrop, the people of Pakistan rightly hoped that Obama, while pursuing his policy of rapprochement would immediately order for a halt of drone attacks well within the territories of Pakistan in brazen negation of Pakistan’s territorial integrity. At this juncture, US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates’ insistence of pursuing the policy of predator attacks on the hideouts of Fata terrorists has come a shock and dreams shattered. Pakistan has all along been cooperative and a frontrunner in the war of terror having sacrificed most both in men and material, yet, unfortunately, it never got the recognition, status and support that if it rightly deserved in the community of nations. Instead the US and the world community giving a deaf ear to Pakistan’s repeated appeals for halting predator attacks has further compounded its problems, as it kept igniting fears and hate among the people and creating new crops of terrorists for Al Qaeda and Taliban.
The government and the people of Pakistan eagerly await Obama reviewing and recasting US policy towards Pakistan in line with his earlier declaration that the road to stability in Afghanistan runs through the peace in Kashmir. The mother of all problems in South Asia, the Kashmir conflict must be resolved for relieving Pakistan pressure from its eastern borders and thus, providing an opportunity to Pakistan diverting all its resources for fighting against terror with undivided attention.

Obama is a ‘munafiq’. He has already stated that he will authorise American troops to enter Pakistan in pursuit of terrorists. He is increasing American military presence in Afghanistan and now because Karzai is not towing the American line Obama wants him removed. He is a conman and is not as honest and straightforward as he appears. Guantanamo would have been forced to close by mounting world opinion yet he jumped on the bandwagon, why did he not close it immediately, but after 1 year? He is a puppet of a neo-conservative Jewish lobby and now he has played I have Muslim relatives card to fool the Islamic world, why did he not declare this prior to his election because he knew he would not be elected. Now the Jewish lobby will use this ‘munafiq’ to smoke screen their illegal actions around the world.

Nothing will change unless we change ourselves. Nothing can be achieved without hard work and sacrifice. Our Rulers do not know the meaning of hard work, devotion, selflessness and sacrifice or self-respect. Since they have come to power through deals and bargains with foreign powers and ex- military dictator, they neither have courage nor will to adopt a policy consistent with national interests, spirits and popular will of the people. The situation is not only insulting but also very depressing. On one hand, they are incapable to pursue a policy befitting our national interests, and on the other hand they want to continue their old policy of luxurious life, 0without least caring for the dying economy and perishing poor people. Our greatest problem is that very few people are realising where the situation is leading us, apparently, this is causing extreme helplessness and despair in people, which may result in national disintegration. Barrack Obama or any president who knows that Pakistani rulers and establishment continue to remain a purchasable commodity, they are least bothered for your so-called sovereignty. Drone attack is not expected to slowdown. Our govt. should have the courage to say, ‘enough is enough’. Only course left for us is to choose our policies ourselves and not on the whims of our foreign bosses. But this needs sacrifice and rising above our own self interests. Can we do it? Answer is clear--no. God help us as our sovereignty has been bargained for few chips of dollars.

It seems more probable that things will remain the same. Obama is a good speaker but he is just that: a good speaker. He won the election because of the tall claims about change. Disgusted Americans were looking for any one who was not a Republican. They would have voted for a wooden post against Bush and his asinine policies. Obama is a product of the American media. Obama comes to the most powerful public office with no personal accomplishment. American media has projected him as the Messiah and, I am afraid, Americans are in for a very harsh awakening, when he does not deliver. Pakistanis should do well to realize that he is not a Muslim and should be cognizant of the fact that he will not be much different from his predecessor, when it comes to dealing with Muslims and, particularly, with Pakistan. He has already shown his true mettle by the most recent missile strike inside Pakistan that killed more than 20 people, nearly all of them innocent civilians. Obama will, probably, be more anti-Muslim than his white compatriots because he has to prove to them that he is as good an American as any white. In Urdu, we have a phrase – ‘shah se ziada shah kay wafadar’. That is Obama. I do not think that things will be much different form the dark days of Bush. The earlier Pakistanis understand this, the better. I wish Pakistani media stops referring to him as Barack Hussain Obama, emphasizing Hussain as if this individual has anything in common with Muslims. The middle name - Hussain - has only historical significance in that he has inherited this as part of his name from his father.

Obama is a good orator. The most surprising thing is why our leaders attach so much hope with obama. He is American President and the Americans and American interests are his foremost priority. He came into power for his country and nation not for Pakistanis. The catchword of his campaign was Change. Sure we see a big change: First black in White House. The rest is not so sweet for third world, especially Pakistan. Our leadership should wake up before it is too late. They should work hard and honestly to change the destiny of this country and the nation. But it is very sad that even in this age of enlightenment, our leadership still live in dream world where American lords will extend their magical hands and pull us from this quagmire of endless problems that have plagued us due to ever-irresponsible political leaders. It is very sad to mention that our leadership is behaving like Hollywood stars. Huge spending shows they are just busy in promoting their party or personal profiles. Personalities and personalities--this is what landlords are famous for. Normally education changes our attitude or way of thinking. But when we see attitude of our leaders, it seems education has failed badly in Pakistan. Who will rescue us? OBAMA-- of course not, but us alone.

Advent of new US Administration will not recast Pak-US ties, as missile attacks launched from remotely-piloted American aircraft continue to kill scores of people in western parts of the country. These continued strikes suggested that the use of drones to hunt militants within Pakistan’s borders would continue under President Obama. 30 missile attacks by unmanned predator drones operated by US CIA since last summer not only against the alleged members of al-Qaeda and other terrorism suspects deep in their redoubts, but also the innocent civilians on the Pakistani side of the border with Afghanistan have clearly shown that there will be no policy change as far as Pak-Afghan border situation is concerned.
Also, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has declared Afghanistan as the new administration’s ‘greatest test’ and ‘top military priority’. In such circumstances, how one can believe that there will be any change in American policy towards Pakistan regarding Afghan-linked issues under new US administration? As far as Kashmir is concerned, though advocating the need for recasting Pakistan-US relationship into a long-term partnership for peace, stability and development, President Asif Ali Zardari asked President Barack Obama to help resolve the lingering Kashmir dispute that remains at the heart of South Asian unrest and challenges like extremism in his article in The Washington Post, but again, I can’t believe there will be any positive development in resolution of the core issue as Kashmir was, clearly, not on agenda of US President Obama during election campaign.
However, as part of economic empowerment efforts for Pakistan, there could be possibility of for swift, but meager, progress towards realisation of economic assistance expansion initiative in Congress. On the other hand, like past, Pakistan will remain determined to curb the ‘menace of terrorism’ in US interest whatsoever.

Whether Obama comes or Bush goes, nothing will be changed about American policy towards Pakistan. Americans know that Pakistani Politicians are beggars and corrupt so they will never change their policy for Pakistan. We have to be united and bold to take some decisions about American's attitude. We as a nation are beggars and we don't have any character. We enjoy our lavish life on loans and donations. We bend our knees before Americans because if the Americans are on your back, then you don't have to be afraid from any one, not even from Law and justice. You can do whatever you want to do, even if you are a criminal your all crimes will be finished and you will get the top most seat in the country. The time has come for 170 million Pakistanis to decide whether they want to get rid of the present politicians or not, the ball is in the court of Pakistanis to decide?

President Obama is the best thing that could have happened to the world after George Bush. No one should expect to agree with every thing he says or does. But his policies are going to be far better than that of previous administration for Pakistan and the world. In Pakistan, we must concentrate first to put our own house in order. Most of our problems are the result of our own misdeeds. Instead of blaming others for our problems, Pakistanis should look within first. President Obama came with a message of change and that is exactly what he has started doing from day one in the office. In Pakistan the new government came in the name of democracy, but has not changed anything and offered nothing but excuses. The 17th amendment, 58-2b and the actions of mini Marshal Law of November 2, 2007 are still there. The economy is in shambles, ordinary Pakistanis are suffering and Government is busy expanding the size of cabinet, last I heard it was 61 and brother of Maulana Fazalur Rehman is the minister for tourism, scary isn’t it.

It should be enough to state that Obama will be shown the Kennedy’s way, if he tries any tilting tricks not in the books of his real trainers covertly planning and ruling America. His statements about Pakistan and intended plans of action about it were nothing more than his vote-winning gimmicks before the election, having no real bearings about his strategy as the US President after his success. Once in Oval Office any US President has to follow the established rules of business and hardly gets any occasion to have his own personal whims or ways. His policy is developed and processed through the well- articulated drill-mill to work accordingly and watchful watchdogs make him do as required. Kennedy precedent is enough to scare the hell out of any president contemplating to deviate. Under the intriguing scenario, it should not be difficult to imagine that Obama has no chance to act different than his predecessors in the context of American dream to rule the world. If deceit and farce are to be the guiding principles, then Obama can only be taken as a stopgap interlude. With his Muslim smear image, he is to be tolerated as a bitter pill. In any untoward eventuality, his VP is well ingrained in every form to take-up the real hidden intents. For this, even nature has provided the un-escapable link. Imagine the intriguing connection of Osama-Bin-Laden and Obama-Bi-den. It should be interesting to realise that Bi-den has visited Pakistan as his first and foremost destination abroad because he must thank his stars of success. Accepting the huge his “National Service to Pakistan”, he was hurriedly bestowed upon by President Zardari, the highest civil award "Hilal-i-Pakistan," in recognition of his "consistent support for democracy and socio-economic development in Pakistan and for his outstanding contribution to the strengthening of U.S.-Pakistan relations." After all, the US Senate’s Committee did not unanimously approve the Biden-Lugar bill, committing 15 billion dollars of development assistance to Pakistan over next decade for nothing. Biden has every right to establish links in Pakistan, to “effectively monitor progress” in utilizing huge dispensation of funds for whatever reasons, during major part of the decade being contemplated for utilizing the huge fortune earmarked, (recent news about reviews on procedures for disbursements, as reported in press, notwithstanding).
However, I would like to suggest to the new American President a simple solution to solve the most intriguing problem faced by him as a legacy left for him by the Ex. President Bush, i.e., the “Mother of all terror”, which is the stupendous progression of hate. Only if Obama could stop perpetration of hate with its several manifestations, he would effectively kill and get the world free from the monstrous tentacles of terror. It is simple to understand that, “hate breeds fear and in turn, fear breeds terror”. For much awaited change, Obama just needs to reverse the equation. He should understand love and faith in its force is much stronger than any weapon of mass destruction. Hate must be replaced with respect for humanity. Terror will die, starved of its food for existence, which is hate.

The change in the oval office is welcome, but it is not going to bring any vital policy change. The USA is a country that has worked for her glory and monopoly for the years. Every new President does something for the prestige of his nation. There are permanent policies of the Americans that are: To maintain hegemony over the world politics, to exploit the world resources, to protect Israel, to subdue Muslims and to rule the world. If any one of these policy is expected to change, then we can say that the change in the White House is a good omen for us and if the permanent policies go on as usual, then the change of face does not matter, not only for Pakistan, but also for the whole Muslim world.

In South East Asia, Pakistan is very important country in terms of war on terror and new American President Mr.Barack H. Obama and his administration knew it very well. I further say, American security and freedom based on Pakistan's political and financial status, if American financial and moral help continues towards Pakistan, it is better for America. Further more, American pilot-less attack on Pak-Afghan border must be stopped immediately, otherwise the relationship between the two countries will break-up because of these attacks.

After Gitmo closing issue, one can hope Obama's next actions will also alter the past blunders committed by Bush's uncanny rule, but sadly, although the damage(s) cannot be undone, yet a different world may surface above the almost sinking levels, provided the US-Pak relations take a drastic turn followed by the change in present Afghan regime and a positive / realistic American approach towards immediate drone attacks halt plus renewed efforts for confidence building between the two partners against war on terror. A frank and unbiased interaction without third country interference is the need of the hour so as to recast Pak-US ties.

Obama will be big "Khabees" for Muslim Ummah because behind Obama, Jews brain is working. I don’t know why Muslims were happy when Obama was taking oath last month. Allah will not help us unless we will not help ourselves. We should make unity in our rows. These Yahood, Hanood and Nasara have same mentality and they can’t come to the favor of Muslim community. These are a group of all ‘Munaafikeen’ and we should be careful from them.

Relationship between the two nations depends upon mutual interests. While US interest in the area lies in the strengthening of Afghanistan with the help of Pakistan, the Pakistan's leaders have no vision for the country. Every nation desires to have stable partners. Pakistan does not offer political stability. Instead, self-interest continues to destabilize the country. Every time the Talibans are chased into Pakistan, the country shouts about its sovereignty. But Taliban burn girls schools and behead innocent civilians, no body raises their voices. Unless Pakistan shows a resolve to defeat militancy, it should not expect a smoother relation with the west.

There is no doubt that Mr. Obama is a good person at heart and would certainly want to deliver all the promises he made to his people. But he has huge tasks ahead of him. We must understand that it is not going to be easy for him to tackle the socioeconomic situation at home and disengage from the two wars that Bush and the Neo-cons started.
America may have a new president, but underneath it all the power remains in the same old quarters. One must not forget that there are still plenty of people in the administration who may not belong to Bush camp, but hold the same views i.e. supremacy of the United states of America. And also one must not forget or underestimate the Israeli lobbyists. They are the most influential and powerful sector of that country. Time will show whether he will have enough foresight and wisdom to set the world on the path of peace regardless of the interest of the neocolonialists that still exist around him.
With peace come prosperity and we have seen what is happening to the world economy all around us. We must have peace in this world and this will be Mr. Obama's biggest challenge. We are not going to see much in the way of change of policy towards Pakistan unless there is meaningful dialogue with the various political factions in Afghanistan in particular Taliban. Like Hamas in Gaza, Taliban are probably the party of choice for majority of Afghans. The coming weeks will show how much control Mr. Obama has over the foreign policy. May be a fraction of conscience may creep into American psyche, but it is very likely to be more of the same at least for a while. The stark reality of politics in the US is that the certain factions are funding political parties, who then want their pound of flesh. The example is recommencement of bombing in Gaza!!

When Obama took over, the next day he sent a gift of missile attack for Pakistani people. However, the rulers in Islamabad are safe and they do not care if a remote area of the country is attacked. The presidency in Islamabad is safe, that is enough for the rulers. Under the circumstances the situation for Pakistan is not changed with Obama.

This moment of crisis is an opportunity to recast our relationship. We are extending our hand in friendship. Indeed, Pakistan’s new democracy has tried open the clenched fists of the extremists, to use a metaphor from President Obama’s inaugural address. Let it not be said by future generations that our nations missed an extraordinary opportunity to build lasting peace in South Asia.”
US never build relation on their politics, they are not Shia neither Sunni they are capitalist and know how to make money with the help of bloodsheds. Mr. Obama is not a lighting hope in the dark. He can’t do anything positive, especially for the people of Pakistan. We must understand our inner powers we must change our directions of thinking Mr. Obama and his company can't stop Taliban to sit in the Awan -e- Sadar in Islamabad.

It is beyond my imagination why people expect so much from Obama or USA and for that matter even from Arab /Gulf countries. Those countries have adopted inward policies just for the ease of general public/population. Our policy is outward on the dictation of others. Don’t be surprised because most of your closest brothers Muslim Arabs want Obama to sort out Pakistan and to keep the war on our soil.

We pathetic Muslims always look at others to solve our problems. No one is going to do that for us. Most of the Muslim world is hoping for a miracle from Obama, which is not going to happen. He is no friend of Muslims. Is it not the same guy who had said, at earlier stage of his presidential campaign, that if Muslim countries don’t stop supporting terrorism, then they should be threatened of attack on Mecca and Medina?
I believe Bush had also said after winning the presidency for the first time that he is crusader and he was true to his words. No other U.S. president has done so much harm to Muslim nation as Bush did. Obama may not be as bad but he is no good for Muslims either. Muslims have to unite and take care of their own business by themselves. I think first step in that direction should be to leave U.N., which has become a tool for western world to penalize Muslim world.

Riding a wave of unprecedented popularity, with clarity of vision and cool temperament, President Barack H Obama was elected the 44th President of USA. In his very first interview to an Arab media, he pronounced his perceptions to trying to remove misconceptions about Muslims and the readiness to shake hands with countries, who unclench their fists. But, and this is vitally important, USA values its strategic relationship with Israel and this link is a cornerstone of American foreign policy. For sure, Obama is the President of USA, and unlike our kleptomaniac leaders, his predilections are governed by the paradigms and parameters that the American national spirit so dictates.
Obama's opposition to Iraqi War stems from the monstrous economic price USA has paid and continues to pay in terms of financial implications and its loss of face internationally. He was constrained by the fact that Bush had sent American soldiers all over the world on an elusive quest to foster democracy and eventually ended up with largest spending binges in US history. The entire scenario has changed in Iraq. A departing kick from a 10-sized boot flung by Muntazir Zaidi condensed the history in that moment of greatest embarrassment to Bush and his Administration. Obama mouthed the general feelings of his compatriots, when he promised to end Iraq war and bring back his troops. Heightened Iraqi nationalism and realization that the invading army butchered millions of Iraqis shall always galvanize strong anti-US sentiments for long time to come.
However, the US plans to bolster and beef up its army in Afghanistan is fraught with incredible consequences. The top military brass in NATO and US army has unanimously sounded their gravest dangers of the Allied Forces meeting their Waterloo in Afghanistan. Despite the presence of over 150,000 foreign troops with formidable fire-power, they only control 27% of the total Afghani area. Hamid Karzai is popularly called the "Mayor of Kabul" - a sad reflection on his limited rule and rickety govt. Afghanistan has a proud history of brave people never surrendering to foreign invaders. Their cousins in FATA are writing history of their own in blood that they neither bow nor bend against brute force.
Despite the facade of Pakistan being an invaluable partner in US quest to eliminate the so-called terrorists, the continued drone attacks (32 of them) in direct violation of Pakistan territorial integrity, continues unabated. Obama appointed Defense Secretary has affirmed US policy of continuing with drone attacks on credible intelligence - despite the protests from the phony Pakistani pipsqueaks - YRG and Czar Zardari. As a self- respecting nation, Pakistan has to assert its independence and cry foul to every norm or nuance of US interventionist policy. Can our soul-less leadership, thrust upon us, capable of even saying boo to a cat, much less a rampaging wild elephant. Only time will tell, if Obama could recast US policies favorable to Pakistan's interest. And this miracle would happen if we have genuine leaders with Pakistan interest close at heart rather than their greed and gumption for monetary enrichment.

Bush said that he did what God told him to do. I wish he can write a book, letting us know if he even learned any thing new in 8 years that world did not knew before him. Musharraf thought he is a God himself, I thought he was an intellegent man but no, he did not learn any thing better either. Obama would rather be an atheist than religous but question is, can he even lead us to the right way in today's world war, keeping world economy apart.

Some people on this forum may be unhappy that President Barack Hussain Obama carries the august middle name of Hussain, yet he is not a Muslim. Muslims should count their blessing that the most enlightened leader of one and the only superpower of the world carries with pride a beloved name of his Muslim heritage and fondly talks about it on the Al Arabia – in an earnest attempt to reach the empathic hearts and open minds of the Muslim world.
It also shows what a great country my beloved United States is in the art and science of self correcting itself after going totally wayward for the past eight sinful years – running berserk committing all kinds of war crimes and crimes against humanity all over the world destabilizing destroying the politics, the economy, the infrastructures, cultures and heritage and the human lives of poor third world countries.
Considering the current psyche of the Muslim community under assault by the religion obsessed Islamist extremists fascists from Gaza to Swat – from Algeria to Indonesia -- who are hell bent on imposing their backward retrograde regressive views upon the Ummah through the barrel of the gun and through the suicide belts – it is lucky that Barack Hussain Obama is not a Muslim – because in order to ‘elect’ him as the President of the United States – the United States would have to rename itself as the Islamic Republic of Disunited States of America – pass an amendment to the Jeffersonian constitution that only a Muslim will become the President of the Islamic Republic of America – and the president will rule by the 17th and 56th(b) amendments -- could dissolve the Congress and the Senate, if they are not tame enough and fire the Supreme Court justice, if the judiciary gets too independent, too impartial, too crazy about rule of law.
As Iqbal would say, “HazaroN saal nurgis apnee benoori pe rote hai/ kaheeN tub jaa ke hotaa hai chaman meiN deedawar paidaa”. After 8 years of Bush’s “benoori” the US has finally found a “deedawar” in Barack Hussain Obama that sees the imperialist contrived “clash of cultures” not as a murderous mayhem of clashing killing colors -- but as a human mosaic of pluralism arched with a rainbow of complementing colorations. As for Pakistan Obama is nothing but good news – Obama is focused on Pakistan as no president of the US ever was. Obama knows that a nuclear Pakistan is in mortal danger of disintegration not due to an explosion from outside, but an implosion imposed from inside by a region that extends from Swat -- only 100 miles away from Pakistan capital Islamabad -- to the entire North and South Waziristan along the Afghan Pakistan border. Pakistan sworn enemy does not live in India or in Afghanistan, in Europe or in the United States – Pakistan sworn enemy is spread all along the Fanatic Fata Land – now it lives only 100 miles away from the heart of Pakistan - in Swat. Pakistan has lost its writ in nearby Swat, it has totally lost its control over thousands of miles of border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan – and it is this area that according to Obama is the fountainhead of terrorism In Pakistan – that tunnels into Afghanistan and from there to the entire world.
Obama knows that the serpent’s head of Jihadi terrorism resides in Fata land – and it must be crushed by whatever means – by militarily means, by economic aid by building infrastructures by providing education and jobs – even by outright bribing of the tribal leaders – whatever it takes to carry out an enlightened pacification of the Fata Land. The Alexander armies could not do it, the British army could not do it the Russian army could not do it – but Barack Hussain Obama will do it – not by his army, but by his intellect – through a ‘clash of ideas’ between a backward primitive mindset and a twenty first century mindset -- the Fata Land cannot be allowed to overpower Pakistan – Pakistan must overpower the Fata land -- must liberate Swat. Obama will help Pakistan politicians and Pakistan army to establish Pakistan writ over its own territory and tame the barbarians into civilized Pakistani citizens that no Alexander no Lloyd George, no Brezhnev could do it -- but Barack Hussain Obama will – whether the Pakistan army and the Pakistani politicos like it or not – because President Obama knows that for his Muslim heritage Pakistan to enter the comity of world’s civilized democratic secular rule of law countries – it must wipe out its homegrown Jihadi terrorism as an instrument of its misguided past foreign policy -- for the sake of its own stability, safety, prosperity and survival -- as well as for the safety prosperity of its neighbors -- and for the safety of the entire Western world. Whether the Pakistani current civilian and military leaderships are capable and serious enough -- to rise to the occasion and meet the Obama challenge of change – bring a quantum change in the medieval psyche of their potentially great country -- that is another 64 million dollar question. But they must.
